UNITED SENIORS NATIONAL SURVEY CHANGES SOCIAL SECURITY DEBATE

Personal Retirement Accounts Important to Seniors for Future Generations

Fairfax, VA — United Seniors Association has released the Social Security results of its "National Survey of Senior Voters," which clearly shows that older Americans' want the current Social Security system to be modernized for future generations.

"In contrast to what many Members of Congress and the news media claim, Senior voters are deeply concerned about the future of Social Security and retirement security," said United Seniors Association Chairman and Chief Executive Charles W. Jarvis. "Our national survey shows almost all (83%) Senior voters believe Social Security Personal Retirement Accounts are IMPORTANT to give their children and grandchildren a better retirement."

The September Survey of likely voters age 50+ completed by pollster John McLaughlin & Associates on behalf of United Seniors Association shows:

  • Seniors voters are CONFIDENT (68%) that they will receive their promised Social Security benefits.
  • Seniors are NOT CONFIDENT (62%) that their children and grandchildren will receive their promised Social Security benefits.
  • Regardless of age, there is strong SUPPORT for Personal Retirement Accounts. Those under age 60 support Personal Retirement Accounts at a 3-1 ratio. Seniors age 60+ support Personal Retirement Accounts at a 2-1 ratio.
  • Regardless of employment status, there is strong SUPPORT for Personal Retirement Accounts. Senior voters who are employed strongly support (75%) Personal Retirement Accounts and those who are retired (58%) support Personal Retirement Accounts.

"USA's latest National Survey of Senior Voters overwhelming shows that Seniors continue to solidly support Personal Retirement Accounts for future generations," Mr. Jarvis said. "Social Security scare campaigns are unconscionable and must stop. We must have an open, honest public discussion of this critical issue."
