Republican efforts to demonize Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle (D-SD) appear to be paying off, according to a new poll conducted for House GOP leaders.

Daschle, who has become a top GOP target since he assumed the top post in the Senate last year, was viewed unfavorably by more than a quarter of Americans, according to the National Republican Congressional Committee's new national poll.

Daschle was viewed favorably by 36 percent of voters and unfavorably by 27 percent, according to the survey of 1,000 likely voters conducted Jan. 15-17 by McLaughlin & Associates, a GOP polling firm. The margin of error was 3.1 percent.

Among voters 65 and older, 38 percent viewed Daschle favorably, while 31 percent viewed him unfavorably. In a subsample that included independent voters, 30 percent viewed the Majority Leader favorably, while 24 percent viewed him unfavorably, according to the GOP survey.
