NATIONAL MEDIA RELEASE

(Washington, DC)  Today, US Term Limits reported the results of a nationwide survey on term limits.  The poll, conducted by John McLaughlin & Associates on January 13, 2000, interviewed 1,000 likely voters across America, and has a margin of error of ±3.1%.  The following questions were asked:

Q:  "Do you favor or oppose placing term limits on members of Congress?"

Support for term limits is remarkably strong across partisan and ideological lines.  Term limits are supported by 69.2% of Republicans, 66.6% of Democrats, and 73.9% of independents.  Term limits are also favored by 68.5% of conservatives, 70.8% of moderates, and 66.2% of liberals.

Q:  "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for a candidate for Congress if the candidate supported term limits for members of Congress and pledged to serve no more than three terms in Congress?"

Women are 61.1% more likely to vote for self-limited candidates, while men are 56.9% more likely to do so.  Voters in the Mountain and Pacific regions of the West most backed self-limited candidates, with 67.6% saying they would be more likely to vote for a self-limiter.
