Incumbent Governor Bob Riley of Alabama easily defeated state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore by a two-to-one margin, taking 67 percent of the vote to Moore's 33 percent. He will run for re-election against Democrat Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley in the November general election. Restaurant and hotel chain entrepreneur Mike Whalen won a decisive victory in the race for the Republican nomination to succeed Congressman Jim Nussle in Iowa's open First Congressional District. Whalen won 48 percent of the vote, beating state legislator Bill Dix's 38 percent and former state GOP chairman Brian Kennedy's 14 percent. Whalen will face liberal Democrat Bruce Braley in November, in one of the country's most closely watched congressional contests. Review our Privacy Notice.
