March 22, 2002 McLaughlin & Associates wishes to extend its congratulations to Stephen Harper, former president of our client, Canada's National Citizens Coalition, on his upset election as leader of the Canadian Alliance. The Canadian Alliance is Canada's leading opposition party to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's Liberal government. Stephen Harper won 55% of the mail-in vote after the resignation of the party's previous leader, MP Stockwell Day, whose comeback candidacy managed only 37.5%. When Harper wins a House seat in the upcoming by-election, "he will become leader of Her Majesty's Official Opposition," according to Canada's Globe and Mail. As the head of the Canadian Alliance, Stephen Harper will lead his party into the next national election to challenge Prime Minister Chrétien. Read about the election results and aftermath in the National Post and Globe and Mail, including this National Post editorial commenting on the implications of Harper's election.
